A Call for the Formation of the Humboldt Solidarity Coalition
What is Humboldt’s response to the rise of fascism in the United States of America? We have recently created as a community what is “among the largest political demonstrations Humboldt has ever seen” on Saturday April 5th 2025 followed by more days of protests. No organization currently exists in Humboldt that can represent the broad diversity of the movement against fascism. Instead, our diverse groups need to coalesce to support each other in these times as a coalition.
PROPOSED STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The Humboldt Solidarity Coalition is a gathering of organizations in Humboldt County working independently to resist fascism. The Humboldt Solidarity Coalition gathers to support each other, defend our community, and organize to ensure democracy and justice for every person in Humboldt County. In this way we show a way forward as a community together.
The three interrelated Strategies the Humboldt Solidarity Coalition employs to win against fascism are as follows.
1) SUPPORT — Facilitate mutual aid efforts to support people immediately impacted by the rise of fascism.
2) DEFEND — Facilitate direct confrontation of fascist policy as it becomes visible in our community.
3) ORGANIZE — Maintain a coalition which unites all allies to accomplish the strategies of support and defend above.
CREATING A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
The Humboldt Solidarity Coalition is also a place for the creation of visions of how we are going to survive as a community after the fascists are gone or after the coup is complete. Either way, our coalition must be more than just a fight against fascism, but also an example of how we come together as a community in formation. The Humboldt Solidarity Coalition can show the unity of the antifascist movement in Humboldt and provide the beginnings of our vision of how we will support, defend, and organize into the future.
Integral to the success of the Humboldt Solidarity Coalition is maintaining a diverse leadership, brought together from a wide range of community organizations. These include advocacy organizations, business groups, and even organizations not normally associated with social change in Humboldt. We must keep in mind the unrecognized ways in which we make participation in the coalition challenging for people and work to eliminate those challenges. We must allow each other to be who we are while not forcing our culture on each other.
IN CONCLUSION
The goal is to defeat fascism.
The strategies are to support each other, defend our community, and organize to win.
The tactics are the actions that our coalition member groups take supported by the solidarity of the coalition.
We can do this. We can win.
