2025.08.24 Weekly Update

This week was all about the big collection from an estate up on Humboldt Hill. 5000 plus books were packed and stacked, moved and stacked again in a new storage unit (one of the units pictured) over three days. My son and a friend helped as well as a couple of employees while the rest of the crew kept the bookshop running. With one of our crew out on vacation, we all had to fill in the gaps. I am only now getting a tiny bit of a breather…

Ending the Study Group due to kid soccer duties is sad, but I’m glad to have the ability to be available to transport the kid and hear about his days in those times. I’m really starting to understand that I don’t have to do everything.

Attended Wiyot Day

Surprisingly, this was my first time at Wiyot Day. It’s a great community event. I think I will table with Eureka Books next year. The food was fantastic!

Petanque on Sundays!

It was the first Pétanque so only one friend showed up. It was a warm (for Eureka) day and it was nice to be not working for a minute!

What I Listened To

Pedro Pascal Got Fired A Lot on Fresh Air

I needed something less political as I was in the midst of all this book moving and found the wholesome and charming Pascal just the right thing.

“Indigeneity is simply a relationship to settler colonialism”: Justine Teba live on Radio Tomada (presented by The Red Nation Podcast)

The audio was not that great so I didn’t finish but I did like to listen to the ideas here about Red Media and Red Nation work. The quote in the title may have been the best part of the interview — understanding that Native people were just people and that the whole idea of being indigenous come from interaction with a colonizing force. Always great to reframe.

Working Class History — WCL14 Live from the Working Class Literature Festival

This was a great show. Listening to folks from around the world really helps me get out of my bubble of noise that is America. They talked about books, too. So that was cool.

Fifteen Minutes of Fascism — Episode 260: GOP Hold Democrats Hostage

Great show as always. I liked how he admitted he missed something last week and brought it up anyway. Making mistakes in public is cool.

Resisting the Authoritarian City Block by Block — Andrew Lee on Movement Memos

Always a great show. I appreciated the way the guest spoke clearly and thoughtfully, matching the host. One interesting idea was that what people resisting displacement are making a very modest demand, but the implications of that demand are actually revolutionary because we can’t keep on going this way. Also, a labor focused movement doesn’t cover everything. People are coming in different ways. I should have written about it sooner after listening. Writing it down helps me understand the concepts better and it’s been a while now…

The Master Plan Podcast by the Lever

This was to be for our Study Group, so I listened again anyway. Great refresher! Amazing how many details I forgot. And amazing how much evil is easily understandable and still allowed to continue.

What I Watched

The Problem with Killer Mike on Signified B Sides

This is a great channel and whenever I watch I learn something new. Yeah… capitalism won’t undo racism.

The power of a tree: why birch and its bark are so important to Anishinabe culture on Stories from the Land on YouTube

This is a great little documentary about Anishinabe people, part of my ancestry. I want to verify the statement that there is no word for art in Anishinabemowin. Sounded like we just do the things and the art is in it all.

I also watched a load of other nonsense while disassociating from my exhausted state.

What I Read

Unfortunately I was pretty wiped out and read very little.

One-Shot Wonders by Roll and Play Press

Planning for a day when I will have some time to play Dungeons and Dragons.
