This week has been anticipatory, followed by fulfillment. I finally had a weekend off (as I write this) filled with a trip to (currently named) Fort Bragg where my sweetheart and I wrote the rail bikes all day Saturday and ate some fantastic meals. Dinner on Friday was the best meal I have ever eaten. I’m not much of a food snob, but I’ve sampled some good things over the years. The place was called Good Bones in Caspar (pictured — between Fort Bragg and the city of Mendocino). Amazing.
This month has included over 65 hours of sick time spread among several employees. That means I worked a lot more that I expected this month. Glad I got some quality time and glad that I am catching up on things.
Lots of work, catching up at the bookshop. Lots of thinking about how to best make the world a better place.
Paid for the Re-Painting the Facade at Eureka Books.
It was over $16,000! Ouch! Buy a book! Please!!
Co-hosted Agenda Review Group
After indicating I would be reducing my attendance as needed, others have stepped in to bottom line this event. It’s a great group and really is an example of mutual aid in understanding municipal politics.
Co-hosted the Networking Event
I was quite tired while hosting this event, but the Network continues to impress me. We have a group starting to make the “Humboldt Solidarity Coalition” an actual coalition. We’ll see how that goes. We also received feedback that leads us to declare that next meeting we will all wear masks, filter the air, and provide professional childcare. I’m excited and proud of these changes.
Attended the Humboldt Library Foundation Meeting
I was reminded of a couple things I needed to follow up on at this meeting. Will complete, but also thinking of making room for someone else on this board. I’m not good at raising money for nonprofits. I’m just not.
Hosted the Solidarity Study Group
Added one to the usual suspects. We decided that we will go ahead with the movie night next Wednesday — How to Blow Up a Pipeline. Advertised as a viewing with “friends.” Got a king sized sheet and a 10 foot metal tube to hang it from. Tested those out on Sunday night. Looking forward to it!
Missed the Humboldt for Palestine Activism Community Cookout
Out of town. So sad!
Missed Outer Roominations
I was out of town! Darn it!
What I Listened To
I have been slowing down on podcasts lately, but here are a few that I did listen to this week.
Antifada — Conflicted Solidarity with Sarah Schulman
I carried Schulman’s book in the shop, but it presents as more moderate than I like so I haven’t really thought much about it. After listening to this interview, I can hear that I was wrong. Schulman seems to know much more than me and be more committed than me to taking actual action to make the world a better place. I should give her book a try (and I will be giving the book to a friend).
Fifteen Minutes of Fascism
Learned a bit about Bolsanaro which I should have already known and likely would have a hard time explaining if pushed. The “See You in Hell” segment was timely in that Ed Fuelner actually died this week and that he was also one of the founders of the Heritage Foundation (as we discussed last week in Democracy in Chains). This is what fascism looks like in the United States. He was a truly despicable person.
How to Survive the End of the World — The Illusion of a Clear, Direct Path to Freedom
Whenever I listen to this podcast I start with a hesitation toward the woo aspects — the astrology references, the tarot, et cetera. That hesitation is always unfounded. This week was particularly enlightening in light of the discussions we have been having in Solidarity Study Group. The guests were from BlackOUT (https://blackoutcollective.org) and the Ruckus Society (https://ruckus.org). I really appreciated it and wish folks would listen to this episode.
What I Read This Week
Anishinaabe Ways of Knowing an Being by Lawrence W. Gross
Continued with this excellent work. See last week’s entry for more.
How to Blow Up a Pipeline by Andres Malm
Listened to the audiobook. Finished mere minutes ago. I would love for so many people to read this. Ready to talk about it with anyone. Now I’m ready for the film drama “inspired by” this non-fiction book. I may have more thoughts on this next week after we watch the movie on Wednesday.
Lost Coast Outpost Articles
Read a few of those. I will often read these to keep up on what’s going down, also North Coast Journal.
I would love to chat about any of this!
