The Eureka City Council is hearing an appeal to a Planning Commission decision to allow a facility assisting folks who are transitioning back to health following addiction issues. This is exactly the right thing to be doing and while no location is perfect, this one is actually pretty good.
I feel frustrated when the neighboring private Catholic school and hardware store support the challenge and not a community project attempting to help people stay off drugs.
I wrote this letter to encourage the Council to support the project by upholding the Planning Commission’s original ruling.
Councilmembers,
I hope that this comment is unnecessary, but regarding item E.1 of the Tuesday April 1, 2025 Meeting of the Eureka City Council I encourage you to adopt a resolution finding the project is exempt from CEQA, and sustaining the Planning Commission’s conditional approval of the North Coast Substance Abuse Council Conditional Use Permit at 309 Harris Street (APN 010-251-016).
The concerns expressed in the challenge are unfounded. This facility will be making our community safer and helping people get their lives on track. We all need facilities like these to be sited close to public transportation and a variety of services. In every neighborhood there are homes and children nearby, but there are also people struggling with addiction. Let’s support the folks attempting to make the community safer and stronger by getting out of the way so they can do that work.
Please adopt the resolution finding the project exempt from CEQA.
Onward,
Solomon Everta
